Crabs Coaches

Bryan Barrett

Coach Barrett played college lacrosse at the University of Delaware, 1998-2001. He was a 2-time captain his junior and senior years. He was selected 1st Team America East Conference Defense in both his junior and senior years, 2000-2001. Coach Barrett enjoyed a great National Lacrosse League career. He played with the Philadelphia Wings, 2022-2006, then joined the New York Titans in 2007 and played there through 2009. He was also a member of the US Indoor Team in 2007.

Duncan Booth

Coach Booth has been with the Crabs since 2006. Head Coach of 2010 team, filled with D1 commits, losing only 1 game in four summers. Has coached 2012, 2013 and 2016 high school teams, along with 2018 Hardshells. Coached our elite teams in Vail Shootout to Championships in 2009, 2010 and 2011, Lake Placid U19 Championship in 2013 and runner up in 2014. Current Assistant coach for Varsity at Roland Park Country School in Baltimore. Coach Booth is Assistant Head of School for Finance & Operations at RPCS.

John Harkins

Played 2 years at Aurora University under Kylor Berkman. Freshman year selected as Team Captain and 2nd Team All Conference. Sophomore year unanimous selection for First Team All Conference. Transferred to Salisbury in 2015. Played 2015-16 seasons and won DIII National Championship in 2016. Coached 1 year at West Linn High School as Varsity Assistant Coach/Defensive Coordinator and helped lead team to State Quarterfinals. Recently moved to Maryland.

TJ Harris

Tj attended DeMatha Catholic High School in Washington, D.C. He played for the Crabs throughout high school and began coaching as soon as he graduated in 2009, while playing for Loyola University Maryland. Member of the 2012 National Championship team. He has worked with a number of Crabs teams, including 2012, 2013, 2018 and 2021.

Sean Heffernan

Coach Heffernan is a 1994 graduate of Loyola University Maryland, where he was an Honorable mention All American. His junior year, he was the 3rd leading scorer, and helped the team reach the NCCA semifinals. In 1994, he was the leading scorer on the team and set the Div I single season assist record, which stood for 20 years. Loyola gained their first victory over Hopkins and reached the NCAA semifinals again. Sean went on to play club lacrosse for Team Toyota along with Gary and Paul Gait, Tom Marechek and Mark Million for several years and then played for Mother's Lacrosse with Steve Marohl. Coach Heffernan has volunteered in various inner city programs out of college and worked various lacrosse camps. Coached in the Cockeysville and Lutherville Recreation Lacrosse programs over the past few years with the Tykers age group.

Al Hernandez

Russ Hewitt

Russ Hewitt served as an assistant on the Crabs 2027/28 team for the 2017/2018 season. He previously served as Head & Assistant Coach for boys and girls teams at Lutherville-Timonium Rec Council (LTRC). He has also assisted with goalie specific training at the club and camp level. Russ played for Loyola Blakefield and collegiately for Salisbury University.

Andy Hilgartner

Coach Hilgartner is entering his 23rd year as a high school lacrosse coach. He is currently the Head Coach at McDonogh School in Maryland. Coach Hilgartner has been on the staffs of Severn School, Woodberry Forest, St. Mary's High School and Sewickley Academy. He was named the Midwest Coach of the year in 1997 and the Maryland State Lacrosse Coaches Association Coach of the Year in 2010. Hilgartner was a coach in the 1998 North-South game and also coached in the US Lacrosse Champion All-American game in 2011. Coach Hilgartner's teams have won 189 games in his 15 years as a Head Varsity Coach.

Jim Huelskamp

My coaching experience spans 30 years and includes youth, high school and college. I’ve coached Travel Club National Championship teams, High School State Championship teams and NCAA National Championship teams. As a player, I was a NCAA First Team All American Midfielder and team captain of Salisbury University’s 1984 team. I played professional lacrosse for 10 seasons, and in 1992 I authored and published "Indoor Lacrosse, The Story of the Major Indoor Lacrosse League". In the summer of 1995, after a coaching stint at Salisbury University and another NCAA Championship, I founded the Ocean City Lacrosse Classic. This lacrosse tournament is the largest and most competitive college and post college lacrosse event in the world.

John Kaestner

Crabs Lacrosse welcomes 2009 alumni John Kaestner to our coaching staff and family.He is coming to us from Detroit Country Day School where he was the Head JV Coach and from PowerPlay LC, where he coached the U17 team. John played collegiately at Johns Hopkins University, graduating in 2013, after being a standout three sport athlete at Saints Peter and Paul High School in Easton Md.

John Kenneally

John did not start playing lacrosse until high school, but went on to play college and later club lacrosse. He has spent countless hours studying the game and honing his lacrosse IQ and coaching skills. John coached all age groups, from Tyker to Junior, when affiliated with Cockeysville Lacrosse from 1994-2013. In 2009, he coached the Maryland All Star Junior AA team, going undefeated in the USL National Lacrosse Festival. John has been coaching with the Crabs since 2013 and has been on the staff of the 2014 and 2015 U-13 Championship teams in the National Premier Youth Lacrosse League. John believes in creating a positive team culture, teaching the finer points of the game, and delivering life lessons for character development of all of his players.

Ryan McClernan

Ryan McClernan is the owner and founder of the club. He is a 25 year veteran of high school, recreation and all star team coaching. A 3x US Lacrosse U19 World team selector Coach McClernan was honored to Chair the 2003 World Games held at Towson University. In 2014 he helped the Baltimore Under Armour team win 5 one goal games on its way to a national UA underclassman championship! He is a former head varsity high school coach (Greenwich HS, CT) head JV coach (Mt St Joe, Md) and a head freshman coach (Boys' Latin, Md). Currently he coaches the 8th grade team at Crabs where he helps prepare some of the areas best players year in and year out for the challenges of high school lacrosse.

Tom Nee

Defensive Coordinator, 2021team - 30+ years of playing and coaching lacrosse. Born and raised in Baltimore, MD. Played lacrosse at Boys' Latin from 1995-1997, and at Syracuse University from 1997-2001.

Kevin Rockhill

Kevin Rockhill, AKA “Rock” began coaching in 1991, the year after completing his college career at the University of Maryland. Kevin was a Graduate Assistant for the Terps before moving on to coach as an assistant at Arundel High School for two years under Clint Gosnell. Since that time, Kevin has coached over the last decade with several Rec. Council Programs as well as Club Teams. His oldest son, Tyler, is a Crab Alum and is now entering his Junior year, playing for the Terps.

Brad Rodier

Brad has been a member of the Crabs coaching staff since 2008, and has been a JV lacrosse coach at several MIAA and Baltimore County High Schools. Brad is a graduate of Elon University. Brad works in finance and resides in Phoenix, MD with his wife and two children.

Ryan Smith

Coach Smith specializes in the development of youth athletes. Over a 15 year career, he has coached athletes ranging in age from 4-14. Prior to Crabs, he was the Head Coach for Greene Turtle Lacrosse Club’s 2021 team. His team won multiple Greater Howard Club Lacrosse Conference (GHCLC) and Maryland Premier Lacrosse League (MPLL) championships, numerous national tournaments, and participated in the Warrior World Series of Youth Lacrosse. In addition, he has coached at Lutherville-Timonium, Cockeysville, and Loch Raven recreation councils. While lacrosse is his focus, he has also coached boys and girls soccer and basketball. Coach Smith is a 1995 graduate of University of Pennsylvania and was a member of the Men’s Lacrosse team. He is a Baltimore native and graduated from Boys’ Latin School. He resides in Lutherville with his wife and two children
